Post-doc position available (May 2020)

A Post-doctoral position is immediately available in the research group in Behavioral Neuroendocrinology (Pr. Jacques Balthazart and Charlotte Cornil) at the University of Liege. The research group in Behavioral Neuroendocrinology is part of the GIGA Neuroscience, a division of the GIGA that integrates all biomedical research in Liege, see:

https://www.giganeuroendo.uliege.be/cms/c_4241824/en/giganeuroendo

This research organization includes over 600 members and provides access to all state of the art technologies in biology (see:

https://www.giga.uliege.be/cms/c_4113263/en/giga

The position is funded by a 5-year grant (2018-2023) from the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (Bethesda, MD USA) awarded to Gregory F. Ball (University of Maryland), Jacques Balthazart and Charlotte Cornil (University of Liege). Initial contract will be for one year but will be renewable for up to 3 years by mutual agreement.

Our laboratory investigates the endocrine and environmental controls of singing behavior and the underlying brain plasticity in canaries. The Specific Aims of the funded award entitled “Steroid hormone regulation of brain plasticity and vocal behavior” focus on sex differences in response to testosterone, the role of the medial preoptic area in the control of singing motivation, the function of adult neurogenesis on song behavior in males and females and finally the function of perineuronal nets in limiting vocal plasticity. The research will involve behavioral quantification, computer-assisted song analysis, neuroanatomical techniques (tract-tracing, immunohistochemistry, in situ hybridization) and biochemical approaches (identification of steroid-sensitive genes in the brain, assay of steroid metabolizing enzymes, steroid assays, stereotaxic injections of viruses to increase or decrease target proteins).

Preference will be given to a candidate already familiar with some or all of these techniques, but we will provide training for motivated candidates. This position is open to PhD in any of the relevant fields (biology, biomedical sciences, psychology, veterinary science) and will remain open until a suitable candidate has been selected. More detailed information can be obtained on the website of the laboratory at: http://www.bioneuro.ulg.ac.be/news.html

Candidates are invited to send by email their curriculum vitae and a letter of motivation to Jacques Balthazart or to contact him at the GIGA Neuroscience, 15 avenue Hippocrate, Tour de pharmacie, B-4000 Liège, Belgium.
